Media Coverage of Samaritan Ministries

Group helps women get on their feet, News Tribune, April 7, 2004

PALM COAST - On March 5, supporters and other interested individuals gathered at Halifax Plantation Golf Club to attend Samaritan Ministries' first "Faith-Based Seminar and Luncheon."

The fund-raiser took place to help the Ministries with its 2004 goals, establishing the Samaritan Inn, a long-term transition house for five to 10 women and their children and to expand their current services offered.

Those present to enjoy the luncheon as well as participate in presenting the program included professors, physicians and persons serving in victims' service arenas and local government offices.

Lorraine Vickery, co-founder of Samaritan Ministries, said the event was a success. The public relations and fund-raising objectives far exceeded their goals.

Local vocalist Kathy Fisher sang a song titled "In Heaven's Eyes," with lyrics summarizing the theme of God's unconditional love for every life.

The program began with Dr. Loray Blair-Britt, a family practice physician, discussing stress and its effects on child development and future implications in adult health.
Britt also discussed spirituality and its part in health, as well as studies regarding belief in prayer as a viable tool in health care.

Dr. Christina Frederick-Rescascino, professor at Embry Riddle Aeronautical University, discussed the importance of social support networks for women in transition in establishing secure employment and living situations and for maintaining psychological health. Frederick-Rescascino emphasized the importance of social support during critical times.

Judith Rosetti, whose title is victims service program specialist, concluded the event with an overview of transitional housing and shared from her experiences and observations of more than 30 years of working with families in crisis--some tragedies and some triumphs.

Other objectives for Samaritan Ministries in 2004 are to obtain corporate sponsors and secure grant funds to provide the foundation for the Samaritan Inn project.

Since January 2001, they have had six quarterly car care Saturdays and one budgeting workshop in Palm Coast. The ministry also has disbursed gift certificates for Thanksgiving meals to several families, Christmas gifts as a group "adopted a family" for the holidays and will have a woman's "Attack Defense Course" on April 13 and 14 during Victims Rights Month.
